Programme: MAT

Introduction to materials and fuels for conventional energy technology. In this part, the emphasis will be given on the basics of chemistry, physics and thermodynamics of energy conversion. The efficiency of existing technologies will be evaluated. Following topics will be included Conception and units in energy conversion. Fossil fuel energy sources. Efficiency and resources. Materials for energy transport. Energy storage Materials for renewable energy generation. In this part, the renewable resources will be presented and it will be shown that mostly material properties limit the efficiency and applications of alternative energy technologies. Materials issue in following subjects will be discussed: Thermoelectric materials. Solar radiation. Semiconductors for photovoltaics. Silicon solar cells. Large area solar cells. Compound semiconductor solar cells. Organic solar cells. Solar modules. Biomass and biogas. Material issues in fuel cells. Wind energy, hydroelectric power, geothermal power. Hydrogen as a fuel and energy storage material Materials for sustainable development. In this parts materials conservation, recycling and sustainable use will be discussed. Water as energy source and energy transmitter. Materials and energy conservation and recycling. Materials for sustainable life
