This course provides the fundamental chemical knowledge essential for understanding and appreciation of the life sciences. It is organised into three main sections: General and Biophysical Chemistry (building blocks of life, oxidation and reduction, chemical equilibria, buffers, pH, concepts of energy); Organic Chemistry (structure and classification, functional groups, selected classes of biologically important organic compounds); Biomolecules and Biopolymers (fats and oils, steroids, vitamins, sugars; naturally occurring polymers). Most of the topics will be illustrated with relevant examples from biological systems.
