1. Overview of image and video compression: digital image and video signals; color sampling patterns; compression basics; quality assessment; applications of digital image and video coding; standardization activities.
2. Entropy coding: Measure of information content, entropy, Shannon source coding theorem; entropy coding; Huffman coding; modified Huffman coding; arithmetic coding; Run-length coding.
3. Digital image coding techniques: Image statistics measure; image coder architecture; quantization; scalar quantization; uniform quantization; vector quantization; predictive coding; DPCM; transform coding; discrete cosine transform; JPEG standard.
4. Digital video coding techniques: motion estimation; block-based motion estimation; exhaustive block matching; fast motion estimation; three step search; orthogonal search, hybrid video coding; intra frame and inter frame.
5. Image and video representation: global visual features, local visual features, biologically inspired visual features, interest point detection, and spatial-temporal data representation.
6. Image and video retrieval: similarity and dissimilarity measures, introduction to dimensionality reduction algorithms, large-scale image/video database organization, reranking, and retrieval representation.
