This course provides an overview of the current sociolinguistic issues, theories and research methods. The relation between language variation and social, contextual, and linguistic characteristics will be examined from a sociocultural perspective. Students will learn to follow the basic principles of sociolinguistics to distinguish functions and varieties of language in a sociocultural context. In addition, the social importance of how Chinese language and its dialects have been used, spread, and changed will be evaluated chronologically within the multilingual and multicultural context of Singapore.
